Palem Kuning | Areca Palm | Dypsis lutescens

John Dransfield, a botanist specializing in palm species, described in his book, The Palms of Madagascar, that Areca Palm is natively found in the eastern part of Madagascar. They are commonly found on the slopes of the moist rainforest, the river beds and particularly in sandy and rocky locations close to the oceans.

The widespread habitat destruction once threatened the plants’ habitat, approximately one thousand plants left were in the wild at the time he wrote his book in 1995. Extinction may be unlikely because of the worldwide distribution and naturalization of the plant. It is still sad knowing their original habitat may no longer exist by now! So give your Areca Palm extra loving by reminding them of their original home – high humidity, good moisture and breathable soils!
