One easy and undemanding plant to add into your collection!
Origin of the plant name comes from the Greek word drakaina meaning female dragon. Dracaenas usually produce red gum-like resin in the stems, comparable to blood. The resin in the past is used for toothpaste, dyes and medicines.
Dracaena are native to Africa, southern Asia, northern Australia, and some species are found in the tropical rainforest of Central America as well. In their native environment they could grow up to 1500 metres and may live for hundreds of years.
They originate from dry areas in the tropical rainforests, making them perfect for indoor houseplants that are easily adaptable. They are well-known to be tolerant with low light and infrequent watering. Most Dracaena species have been tested to help improve air quality.
